EDMONTON — A soldier is in custody after shots were fired from what police believe was an assault rifle outside an Edmonton home.

There were no injuries in the overnight standoff which began when officers answered a call about shots being fired in a north-end neighbourhood.

Police spokeswoman Patricia Chalupczynska says officers believed a man had barricaded himself in the home with his wife and child, so the tactical unit was called in. Contact was made with the man via telephone and the suspect surrendered peacefully a few minutes after 6:00 a.m.

The soldier’s identity is not known and Chalupczynska says there are no details on his military background or the exact type of firearm involved.

There is no word on whether police will lay charges, but she says military police will also be investigating.

So we're thinking what here?  Small fine, community service, 6 months probation?
