Stompin' Tom Connors Dead: Canadian Music Icon Dies At Age 77

Canadian music icon Stompin' Tom Connors has died at the age of 77.

A release on the folk musician's website confirms that Connors died of natural causes at his home in Ontario.

Connors is perhaps best well-known for "The Hockey Song," but has also released dozens of albums since the '60s.

Spent a few nights in the Mess or a biv site back in the good ol days with a few brews downrange and someone playin' a guitar with everyone singing along to his songs.  :salute:

Back in the mid-'70s I got to watch him play in a hockey arena in Victoria, B.C.

From the staff at www.stompintom.com

We must regretfully announce today the passing of the Great and Patriotic Stompin' Tom Connors. He died this March 6th 2013 with his Family seeing him off. His family have given us a message from Tom that he wanted passed along to all of you upon his death:

"Hello friends, I want all my fans, past, present, or future, to know that without you, there would have not been any Stompin' Tom."

"It was a long hard bumpy road, but this great country kept me inspired with it's beauty, character, and spirit, driving me to keep marching on and devoted to sing about its people and places that make Canada the greatest country in the world."

"I must now pass the torch, to all of you, to help keep the Maple Leaf flying high, and be the Patriot Canada needs now and in the future."

"I humbly thank you all, one last time, for allowing me in your homes, I hope I continue to bring a little bit of cheer into your lives from the work I have done."

Sincerely,

Your Friend always,

Stompin' Tom Connors

His songs were not only entertaining but educational:

Sing a song for our boys.

RIP Stompin Tom.  If you see my grandpa up there,  he wants to shake your hand.

I only heard about this today, driving to Pennsylvania. It seems that Tom even merited a story on NPR.

Listened to a lot of his songs in my youth (Tilsonburg is just an hour down the road  ;)), but sadly had let it drift away as the years passed. Now I remember what I missed...
