So I was poking around on the internet a few weeks ago, looking for some way to upgrade my mag light, without actually paying for a surefire. And I think I found it.

I bought three things from http://www.zbattery.com/, and then unfortunately found out the next day that http://www.cpgear.com/ now sells one of those things cheaper.

The first is the Night Ize fibre optic light bender...

http://www.zbattery.com/zbattery/fpo05aa7.html

Does what it promises. Bends light.

The second is the Night Ize LED conversion kit with push button tail cap.

http://www.zbattery.com/luc-07.html (CP Gear also sells this now for $8 if I remember correctly, plus shipping is less)

The bulb is decently bright, three white LEDs, but is flood only, you loose the ability to adjust the spot. But still, fairly bright.

The button is the gem of this buy. You loose the ability to carry a spare bulb, but if you're switching the bulbs to LED, it shouldn't be a problem. The button itself is plastic, the housing around it is aluminium, and it seems like it's reasonably weather proof (Not for use under water, but I'm sure it would survive some rain or a drop in a few puddles or probably even a river crossing). You've still got to have the front of the flashlight slacked off to use push button (Not sure why the instructions don't mention it, but if you remove the black plastic plate inside the maglight that's under the normal bulb, you don't even need to have the front slacked off, the push-button does all the on/off), but it saves the irritating problem that maglights have of coming on by themselves when being jostled about too much.

Over all, definitly a value for the price.

The third is the Terra Lux TLE-5 LED upgrade kit http://www.zbattery.com/tle-5.html

Bought on a whim because it promised "tactical flashlight performance on a maglight budget".

Installs into a regular maglight in place of the bulb, I turned it on and unfortunately looked into the light, and am still seeing spots 10 minutes later. Definitly delivers as promised... also compatible with the above push button switch. If anyone knows where to get one of these cheaper, it would be appreciated...

End result, is with conversion from $US to $CND these things are a bit pricey, but they deliver as promised. Certainly, it's not as good,  reliable, or bright as a sure fire, but it makes a reasonable second, and substantially cheaper.

Cool review.  Did you happen to price out something like a Surefire G2, by any chance?

It's just part of an on-going crusade of mine to upgrade my maglight (And no, I didn't price out the Surefire-G2 unfortuantely, as I probably could have bought one and a starting supply of batteries)...

MSRP For a surefire G2 is $36.60US which is *less* then what I sank into the out-dated POS that is now the mini-mag (I found another online store that sells the TerraLUX LED bulb cheaper, as well as cheaper shipping, am now in the process of kicking myself, I would NOT reccomend buying said items from Z-Battery, if anyone is interested, I'll post the other store, as I forget the adress right now)

The only difference is the cost of the batteries, the surefire uses the lithium batteries with a run-time of 60 minutes (Which I'd have to buy myself), whereas my mag-light uses AA batteries (Which I can get from our SQMS) and according the manufacturer, I'll get 10 hours of run time with 7 hours of it full strength (How believeable that is I'll determine eventually).

Cost of surefire G2 $42.50CND + Shipping and Batteries (I'm sure it can be found cheaper somewhere)

Cost of Maglight + Upgrades $25-45 (Or $15-35 if you've already got a maglight sitting around).

End result, an upgraded maglight does still not a tactical flashlight make, but, since most of us have at least one mag-light sitting around anyway, the upgrade sold by wheelers is a reasonably good investment, particularly if you're ordering somthing from them anyway. The terra-lux bulb... probably not viable if you're in the market for a good tactical flashlight, but it multiples the usefulnes of  maglight by a substantial amount, it is also quite bright.

The maglights also fits in the pocket in the tac-vest. Do the Sure-fires fit in that pocket? Because if they do, I'll really kick myself :)

"My Momma told me; 'you gotta' shop around'"  I didn't want to tell you and make you feel bad...  :D

For a general use, minimal light, long lasting flashlight, using the Mini is probably your best bet without sinking a small chunk of change.  However, those Inova LED lights are pretty cheap, will probably work better and fit into the mini-mag pouch on the TV.

Found the store after...

http://store.led-replacement.com/index.html the high intensity LED bulb for the mag light *plus* a push button tailcap manufactured by the same company (Just from looking at it, I'm guessing it's better quality then the night ize button) for under $35 dollars CND.
