Monument plaques stolen
'I'M JUST APPALLED'
Posted By ERIN FLEGG, FOR THE WHIG-STANDARD

A copper plaque on the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery national monument in City Park has been removed and several others have been damaged, an act Col. Bob Chamberlain said was likely spurred by the resale value of the copper.
"They're doing this all over Canada. They're going into cemeteries," he said yesterday.
Chamberlain has filed a report with the Kingston Police, who said the case would be assigned this morning.

Chamberlain, who is President of the Kingston Gunners Association, said this is the work not of vandals, but of professional thieves.
"This was deliberate," he said. "You have to take the rosettes off and use power tools."
Chamberlain said he found out about the damage yesterday when one of his colleagues called him after driving by the site and noticing the damage. Chamberlain said he suspects the theft occurred sometime in the last week.

He said the theft represents a sizable loss for the association.
"We spent a lot of money refurbishing these plaques." He said the problem is not new and is not unique to Kingston.
"The national monuments in Ottawa have similar things happen."

He wants the public to know about this problem in the hopes vigilance will help to curb thefts and damage to war memorials.
"I'm just appalled," he said. "It's desecration."

There is no honour left in the world. This is a shameless act of vandalism and theft, that to the perpetrator means less than spit. For shame.
