Quebec-based soldiers to conduct live-fire exercise in Alberta
MA-CMTC 06.002 - October 3, 2006

CFB WAINWRIGHT, Alta. - The news media are invited to watch a live-fire exercise involving Quebec-based soldiers at CFB Wainwright, Alta., on Friday, October 6, 2006. The exercise begins at 7 a.m. MDT, and so attending media must be at the front gate of CFB Wainwright no later than 5 a.m. in order to be escorted to the viewing site.

This live-fire exercise - involving Infantry, Armoured and Artillery weapons and ammunition – will conclude the soldiers’ one-month of extensive training undertaken at the Canadian Manoeuvre Training Center (CMTC) in order to be fully operational and ready to deploy to any theatre of operations, current or new, on short notice.

The majority of the 900 Canadian Forces personnel, mostly from CFB Valcartier, Que., have been training for over a year for contingency operations. More than 150 soldiers from this group are to deploy soon to Afghanistan, and several of these soldiers will be available for interviews.

Interview Opportunity
Those who cannot attend are invited to participate in an audio conference from 1 to 2 p.m. EDT on the previous day – Thursday, October 5, 2006 – with senior officers and soldiers from 5 Canadian Mechanised Brigade Group by calling (613) 364-8440 (code 1274) no later than 12:45 a.m. Thursday.

Note to the Editors and News Directors. Media representative who wish to attend this event must contact Capt. Tom St-Denis, CMTC Public Affairs Officer, at (780) 842-1363 ext. 5971, for details.  For security, the observation post is situated at 4 km from the objective, and so television footage quality will depend on camera lens capability.  Please note that telephone communications with troops in the field are problematic at best, and so reporters wishing for telephone interviews are encouraged to take advantage of the audio conference.
