The pilot of an RCMP helicopter was killed in a crash during a training exercise east of Cultus Lake, B.C., on Tuesday afternoon.

The man, a civilian RCMP member, was Air 5’s sole occupant. RCMP would not disclose his name until extended family members were notified.

“It is with incredible sadness that I must now report that our pilot has passed away,” Chief Supt. Wayne Rideout said. “At this point, there are many unanswered questions.

“I want to express my most sincere condolences to his family, friends and co-workers during this difficult time,” he said.

The victim had extensive experience as a helicopter pilot but had only been with the Mounties a few years, said Rideout, adding that RCMP pilots are usually civilians.

There was no word on reports the pilot had a heart attack.
