Native American 'Shadow Wolves' hunt for terrorists

The Shadow Wolves are an all-Native American law enforcement tracking unit, now assigned to the Department of Homeland Security, who for years have searched for smugglers along the U.S.-Mexico border. Now, according to this report, they have a new assignment.

According to The Australian, the unit is being sent to Tajikistan and Uzbekistan to help train to local border units in the ongoing hunt for terrorists crossing into Afghanistan.

More from the article: "The Pentagon has been alarmed at the ease with which Taliban and al-Qaeda fighters have been slipping in and out of Afghanistan. Defense officials are convinced their movements can be curtailed by the Shadow Wolves."

The Smithsonian magazine profiled the Shadow Wolves in 2003, when they were hunting for drug smugglers in Arizona. The article says the Wolves are "possibly the world's best trackers."

The unit was established in 1972 by Congress.

A great story about some extraordinary men. They are teaching tracking skills and native hands signals to border guards to prevent terrorists from crossing the Afghanistan Pakistan border. My grandmother is Mi'kmaq so I always like to see positive stories about aboriginal peoples.

It is a great story about some extraordinary men. It is also already covered in this thread.
