New kit porn from Dropzone   ;D

Yeah, I noticed that too - no price and no details (I'm assuming these are coming).  Nice looking bags though.

Details and price are up now, 599.99 for CADPAT (-20% for mil mbrs).

Not bad when you consider that a Kifaru in OD will run you the same.

Looks like the issue day pack.  Why not wait until they issue you one?

It's about twice the capacity as the small pack...

'as the small pack... "

You don't mean the NBCW bag, do you?  The day pack will hold what a 1982 large pack will, minus the Bag Protective (Valice).

But you dont get the cool guy braggin rights then...

sure you do, because then you have a CADPAT ruck.  ;)

anyways looks like a decent piece of kit and its dropzone. :D

Looks like a decent pack. I'd love to pick one up, especially if it comes in cadpat.

i think i'd wait until i heard some feedback from soldiers who have used it and check with my unit wether or not i'd be allowed to use it.

$600 is a lot to spend for somethign that will sit in my closet :)

Not too bad looking, but I'll stick with my Kifaru EMR for now.

Interesting to see how fast private industry can field a solution of getting a new ruck, vs. the bureaucracy of NDHQs Clothe The Soldier who are looking at a fielding time of 2007-2010, depending on who you talk to.

what the? they got multi-cam, looks like I might know where I'm going with my business now.
if only they'd let me use a non-issued ruck, I would.

Well, the "Mutha Ruka" info page is complete - nice work Brian and the Dropzone crew.

Funny, as Matt mentioned, the private industry is now fully capable of putting out a CADPAT ruck with a respectable design while the CTS program is trying its best to get one issued (15 years after the fact).  Why don't they just contract Dropzone to make their ruck for CF issue?

I noticed that the "Mutha Ruka" is about 75 liters with the small packs on the side - I seem to recall the Bergan being a 100 liter bag with two 10 liter side packs, so this one is a bit smaller.  This pack is not a competitor with the Kifaru EMR (which is a whooping 120 Liters), but rather in the same field as the Kifaru MMR (at 70 liters).

That being said, there is nothing wrong with 70 liters, it takes discipline to have a 120 liter bag (covered in PALs webbing) and not weigh yourself down to ineffectiveness in packing it.

There is one at the PPCLI kitshop - while not a Kifaru (sorry guys) it truly appears to be an excellent pack - and if I did not have the EMR I would grab this.

Infanteer,

Funny you mention this, as it was actually one of my main reservations against purchasing the EMR.  However, Mel from Kifaru (a great guy to shoot the breeze with about kit in general) explained that the 120L rating was from the pack with its snow collar and lid fully extended.  Normally the ruck is more in the 85L range, but does have the option of being absolutely extended to 120L when absolutely necessary.  Even in Norway with all my cold weather kit I didn't have to extend the ruck.

I think that Brian has got a great niche product here and his biggest competition will be the CTS ruck itself (when and if it gets fielded to who?) or if Kifaru was to get a Cadpat license.  While I'd love to see Kifaru doing stuff in cadpat, I doubt happening anytime soon, simply because of DND policies on granting cadpat licenses to countries outside of Canada and the headaches that Kifaru would have to go through to obtain one.  They're already busy enough with filling US domestic orders in OD, Coyote Brown and Multicam.  The amount of $ that cadpat rucks would generate is peanuts compared to what they're already doing.

Thank you very much for the kind words and response to our Mutha Ruka gentlemen.

Sizing of packs is much like temperature ratings on sleeping bags. BE CAREFUL!!
At Drop Zone we always under rate our sizing and performance claims simply because I don't need some angry infantry soldier half my age punching me in the beak after a disappointing experience with my gear.

Many pack manufacturers fill their packs with dog biscuits, barley, small rubber balls or whatever, then pour the contents from the pack into a large box with graduations in liters and or cu. inches marked on it in an effort to establish capacity. This method works and is generally accepted in the industry. However the contents tend to push the pack's fabric to its dimensional limits, filling in every nook and cranny, in effect increasing its measured capacity, usually for marketing purposes.

This would be an accurate measurement method if the soldier were to carry loose 9mm ammo!

At Drop Zone we used the measurements posted and calculated the capacity mathematically. Our measurement does NOT include the spindrift collar with the hood extended.

I am not claiming that either method is right or wrong. I just mention it so you, the users, are better armed to make informed purchasing decisions.

We have an original Brit Bergen on temporary display in our showroom right now, sitting beside our Mutha Ruka. The Bergen is indeed slightly smaller ???

I hope this helps to clarify some things.

Kind Regards
Brian Kroon
