I for one think that your rant was spot on, hence my MilPoints for you. I'm not Ukrainian,  but I get it.

Cheers.

Next you'll be saying that it's just "Yukon"!

I actually tend to call it 'cold' or 'effing cold' or 'this arctic hellscape'. :D

Pretty much exactly the point I was trying to make, yet people continue to bombard me with hate.

I understand the issue, I'm aware of the problem. I, much like others, as we can see in the thread, think the problem is minimal.

I'm from The Islamic Republic of Iran, and people call it "Iran". I couldn't care any less. This is my standpoint on the issue.

My 2 cents. Don't hate me because of an opinion.

Yes, but imagine how you'd feel if somebody called it "the Iran".

Right now, "The" Crimea, as it is part of Ukraine.  For now

Or "The" Crimea, part of "The New Liberators"!

One person critiqued your English, and that's 'bombarded with hate'?!

You're going to have a fun-filled time in the CAF.  Enjoy

Two (I think) comments on this thread, milpoints deducted, deemed as offensive, multiple private messages.

Enough conversations about this. Talk about the thread's topic.

I understand that it isn't proper English to call it "The Ukraine", but who are we to force people into saying things properly.

"The English call it chips, while we call it fries." - Some guy from the USA.

No one is hating on your opinion. I'm trying to give you the perspective of a Ukrainian Canadian as to why the "the" is important to us.

Educated yourself, three good articles on why the "the" is gone.

The only issue that I see is that it's not a group of islands, regions, etc. For example, the Philippines, the United States.

But why did we come to refer to Ukraine as "the Ukraine" in the first place? While there are examples of country names that are preceded by "the," this is usually only done when the country name refers to a group or a type of political organization — for example, the United States of America, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands.

THAT makes sense.

It may seem like a minor detail, but many people are angered by the addition of "the" to Ukraine, arguing that it is being used to help sideline Ukrainian statehood.

THAT is unnecessary. But I see your point.

Edit: quote system sucks on the mobile app.

For people like my 93 year old grandfather the "the" harkens us back to a time when it was "The Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic." At which hands he suffered, and fought for the freedom of his country. So we do take a stand when it comes to being Ukraine vs. the Ukraine

Reminds me of a spook on one movie saying that it's CIA, not the CIA. When asked why he said "Do you say the God?"
