Well it was inevitable, I have finally been plucked as the sacrificial NCM to organize the unit's mess diner. Most on here would probably agree that if it wasn't for the booze they can be pretty boring. I'm looking for ideas to make this Christmas diner more exciting, memorable, or at least 'not suck'. If no one can think of party games or traditions, then sometimes all it needs is some good decoration suggestions. Anyone here have some memorable mess diners and what made them special -- drunk RSM wives stories excluded -- please share them.

Our unit has the Jr Pte and the CO switch jackets, at which point the 'new' CO, under the direction of the older NCMs, goes about ordering rounds on the COs tab, and stuffing the CO's pockets with mashed potatoes and gravy.

The tradition of the junior pte and CO exchanging tunics is common, and age old.
Stuffing the CO's pockets full of food is something a child would do, IMO. The RSM should have it stopped.

Find out how many are in the RCR, and perhaps have a nominal roll.  Go to Normandy Court right away and book it for the day that you want, before other Units book all the good dates.  Inquire as to whether the Mess provides beer, or whether you have to purchase it from the Kyrenia Club.  And that is about all you have to do for the Men's Xmas Dinner........Have the Regt'l Adjt print off the Christmas Song sheets for the Junior Officers to have to sing carols while the Snr NCO's serve the men.  Find out who the youngest Pte is and the oldest Cpl so that you will have the CO and RSM positions filled.

Chinese food and Jugglers always works.

Some "getting to know you" games, perhaps?

It's all about what you want to do.....
One of my old units would have it's Xmass dinner with the Vets @ the St Anne's veteran's hospital.
Xmass prezzies for mombers of our unit + those poor souls who had nobody that came to visit in the year.
Unit band would play xmass carols throughout
Vets mixed in with the troops
Offrs slinging the food & Sr NCOs + subbies servint it to the troops.
Youngest got to wear COs tunic & olders MCpl got the RSMs

Floor hockey round robin tourney and ending with a Boozer when everyone got back to the unit.
