Just curious about an item in the Today In Military History sidebar:

HONG KONG, effective dates for battle honour begin (to 9 Mar 42)

Why to 9 Mar 42 if the colony surrendered on Dec. 25/41 and the survivors fought on to survive a POW camp until Aug/Sept//45?

The dates for Hong Kong should read "8-25 Dec 41".

The outside dates for theatre operations in South East Asia are "8 Dec 41 – 9 Mar 42" for "SOUTH-EAST ASIA 1941-42".

Thanks, makes sense now.  So does 9 March relate to the Burma campaign as Singapore fell in February?

The list I have posted on my website identifies the actions involving Canadian units. It is an extract from a much larger Commonwealth battles list which would have to be consulted for a broader context.

9 Mar 42 must indeed be the date ending the Commonwealth's first campaign in the theatre as  as Malaya & Singapore had already fallen,  the retreat from Burma was more or less completed:

and effective resistance in the Dutch East Indies campaign,  which involved Australian & Brit troops,  seems to have ended during that week:
