Military aircraft are responding to a downed helicopter involved in the rescue of two seal hunters stranded along the west shore of Hudson Bay.

The helicopter crashed near the community of Arviat, Nunavut, at about 3:45 p.m. ET.

Search and rescue officials report that helicopters based in Cold Lake, Alta., and Quebec City are en route to the scene. Military aircraft are also in the area and are attempting to reach the scene of the crash.

A Hercules aircraft is already in the area.

The severity of the circumstances and the condition of those aboard the privately owned helicopter are unknown. Medical staff are on standby in Arviat in case there are injuries.

A man in his 50s and a 16-year-old boy, believed to be his son, were being rescued after getting stuck on the ice about 10 kilometres east of Arviat.

A Hercules aircraft spotted the hunters on the ice early Wednesday morning.

Search and rescue volunteers in Arviat located the hunters on a piece of ice about three kilometres from the community earlier Wednesday.

Co-ordinator Luke Pauppa said boats headed out to pick up the hunters this morning, but one official says the icy water made it difficult, so they needed to get them with a helicopter.

This morning, Pauppa said the two were reportedly in good condition, despite the extreme cold temperatures overnight. Environment Canada issued an extreme windchill warning yesterday for Arviat, with temperatures expected to feel like -55 to -58 C.

Pauppa said the two men went seal hunting Tuesday and a search began Tuesday evening when the two didn't return.

“The plane dropped a satellite phone and we are expecting a call from them anytime,” Pauppa said.

Thanks, CTV just updated the story and it now also says private helicopter.

Mods, can we edit the subject to take out the word 'Military' to avoid confusion?

Done, thanks.
