Graphics Won't Open

For the last few weeks, the army.ca site has gone kind of haywire on my computer, which is an Apple G3 with OS 9 and a high speed cable connection. I used to have the site bookmarked at www.army.ca then a few weeks ago I found that when I clicked on that URL bookmark nothing would happen. So I just go to army.ca without the "www" and now I can access the site but none of the graphics open and the formatting of the pages is all weird. Can any of the administrators shed some light on what may be happening?
.

Sounds like your browser pencil tech or maybe a virus. I got infected with a trojan and it completely f*cked my pc. Is it just this page that you are having problems with?

No it's just army.ca that I'm having this problem with. I'm not saying it's not a virus, but the bad guys don't usually bother writing them for Mac OS 9 (haha). My browser is the Mac version of Internet Explorer.

Pencil Tech, http://www.army.ca now redirects to http://army.ca, but both should work for you. As for the formatting/graphics, can you post a screen shot? Maybe we can figure out what's going on...

Anyone else having similar problems?

Mike, I tried to post a screenshot but I got an error message saying the file is too large. Basically, all the image files on a page show with little red X's on them. Because the images are not showing up the formatting is out of whack. Sometimes the main photo at the top shows up. If I use the old url with the www in it my "connecting to" field fills up with forward slashes and it doesn't redirect.

Ok, no need for a screen shot then, it seems the images are failing to load. I'm not used to working on Macs, but if you can do the equivalent of right clicking on the red X and select properties, that would help. What I'm looking for is the URL of the image itself. Similar to http://army.ca/forums/Themes/Armyca/images/english/reply.gif. In fact, try going to that link, and see what happens.

Sorry Mike, I had to disappear for a bit. What happens when I click the highlighted link in your last post is I get the gif opening in a separate browser page. Now all the links on the page work for me, I just don't get the images opening when I load a given page. I 'm on the reply page right now and the URLs for all the smiley faces, etc. say "Link: javascript :void(0)" I can download any of the other gifs to disk eg. folderopen.gif but no images display in my browser on any page as I go throgh the different forums. (Actually, I tell a lie, the buttons for Post, Preview and Spell Check are currently visible but not the fourth one which is for Index).

Well to make things more complicated, I'm tinkering with the server in a way that may cause things to work properly for you at times, and then revert to your "problem state" at other times... Hang fire, I'll try to get things stable and then ask you to run a couple tests if you get a chance.

Thanks
Mike

OK, I'm done. For now. ;)

Try these 2 links and let me know how they work:

http://army.ca/forums/Themes/Armyca/images/english/reply.gif

http://www.army.ca/forums/Themes/Armyca/images/english/reply.gif

They should both show the reply icon, with the second link redirecting (via 301 permanently moved redirect) to the first link.

Mike, the first link did show the reply gif but the second one didn't do anything - just opened an empty browser page.

:( What version of Internet Explorer are you using? If it's *grossly* out of date, that might be the problem. If not, it appears your browser isn't honouring redirects for some reason...

It's Internet Explorer 5.17, which is the most recent verion for Mac below OS X. Well I'm getting a new computer soon so hopefully it will work better. So far, it appears I'm the only one having this problem Mike so don't worry about it - nobody else has mentioned it.

Very odd, it must be a config setting then... If any Mac users are out there, can you let us know how/if it works for you?

Howdy,

I also run a Mac and I am having the same problem.  I am not technically savvy so the only thing I can tell you is that I only get the white box with a red circle in it, with a white x in the circle.  The first time I opened this site I was able to view the graphics but as soon as zI became a memer the ability to view graphics was lost.

By the way, this computer is only two months old and is an eMac.

Cheers

Thanks, the plot thickens. :( What's your initial link for this site? Is it www.army.ca, army.ca, or something else?

"By the way, this computer is only two months old and is an eMac."

Mike, the plot does indeed thicken, because he's obviously got a new Mac running OS X and I'm running an old G3 with OS 9. I don't think Seagull has the problem (exactly the same as me) as a result of becoming a member but something happened a while back in the coding of the site that Macs are now having a problem with.

Yeah, I know what happened, I just don't know why it's a problem. :(

If you go to www.army.ca, you're now redirected to army.ca, to prevent some issues that were cropping up. (In fact, anything.army.ca will redirect... give it a try: http://testme.army.ca). It's all done using standard web redirects, so it *shouldn't* be a problem. And yet somenhow it is. :(

These 2 links are a good example... they should both work, but for affected users, the second one doesn't. That is, the www.army.ca doesn't redirect to army.ca for some reasaon:

http://army.ca/forums/Themes/Armyca/images/english/reply.gif
http://www.army.ca/forums/Themes/Armyca/images/english/reply.gif

Worse, it seems like this is somehow preventing graphics from being viewable, which is a real pain. Rather than just undoing the change, I'd prefer to understand the nature of the problem, if possible. However I'm not sure where to go from here...

I just double checked the logs and the config... it all *seems* legit. ???
