Is it true that you have to be DP1 qualified to get a gerber? Because thats the story the QM tells, which is puzzling, as having a gerber on SQ and on DP1 would be more than handy.

I got issued one when I got my kit

Same here. But i guess it depends on where you're training. Maybe your area doesn't have enough. Or maybe the guy/girl you were asking is an asshole. Or maybe the kit entitlement changed. Who knows? If you really want one you can buy it, they aren't that expensive. And at least that way you can choose one you like.

Cheers,
Pinky

well if they issue one to you then they only have 3 left on the shelf instead of 4!  ;D

realistically though, you should be issued it along with the rest of your kit. I'm sure of the the Supply Techs on the boards can give us the definitive answer though.

On my BMQ everybody who was in Southern Alberta got issued one and everybody from Red Deer and Edmonton didn't, so it probably depends on how many they have at that time.

Everyone is supposed to get one but im sure they are going to give it to troops who need it first, any of the EME guys or engineers weapons dets etc..

Here is a website that has a bit of info,

I would have to say the average soldier is entitled to it

I got my kit last week and they didn't gave me any gerber .. maybe they didn't have anymore left ;)

I've been told that they do not issue gerbers to PRes for the last couple of years....
Why? Never been told any reason.... Just Because.....

Soldiers to be issued improved multi-tool

In 1996, the Gerber® Multi-Tool replaced the C5 pocketknife. Starting in June, an improved multi-tool will be issued under the Clothe the Soldier project.

The existing Gerber will remain in service for the foreseeable future. The SOG® Multi-Tool with crimper will be issued to all members of entitled Land Force combat arms units, as part of their personal equipment and will be issued on a one-for-one exchange with the Gerber tool starting in June.

The in-service Gerber tools will then be re-issued to CF personnel conducting land operations who do not require a crimper to prepare explosive charges.

Each multi-tool will come in its own carrying case.

The SOG includes such features as locking blades, a saw, a dull matte (black) finish and a field expedient explosive detonator crimper used in the preparation of simple charges. The tool will be issued with a bilingual instruction sheet that includes component use, features and care/maintenance.

For more information about items under the Clothe the Soldier project, visit www.army.dnd.ca/LF/equip/hab/index_e.html.

For what it's worth, I just got kitted out today and I was indeed issued a Gerber.

I got mine during my initial kit issue.

I wonder, does the supply system have any kind of country-wide standard or are the 'rules' about kit up to the whim of whoever works in stores at the time? Because it often seems like a standard is sorely lacking. You can't imagine what I had to go through to get winter kit for BMQ (seeing as mine was in the winter at the time), even for the old stuff that I still have (haven't bothered to go get the next gortex kit yet).
It does seem that way when I look back at our BMQ - candidates with this or that, with different results depending on the day that you went in to supply...
and of course the everchanging entitlements. Since I've been in since Nov, it has flipped from after TG3/Dp1 to after BMQ and back to after trades course for Gortex.
Same with the gerber, told "nope, only issued to reg force nowadays". Oh well.

I remember when I first joined the lucky few who had gerbers on BMQ had different ones than the reg force guys. One was black and one was just an ordinary gerber. I can't remember who had what though.

According to the "Clothe the Soldier" webite, both Gerber and SOG are available for issue.  The Gerber is supposed to be matte gray and the SOG matte black.  My Gerber is matte black; I'm sure lots of other people have the same colour.
