Soldiers to be issued improved multi-tool
In 1996, the Gerber® Multi-Tool replaced the C5 pocketknife. Starting in June, an improved multi-tool will be issued under the Clothe the Soldier project.
The existing Gerber will remain in service for the foreseeable future. The SOG® Multi-Tool with crimper will be issued to all members of entitled Land Force combat arms units, as part of their personal equipment and will be issued on a one-for-one exchange with the Gerber tool starting in June.
The in-service Gerber tools will then be re-issued to CF personnel conducting land operations who do not require a crimper to prepare explosive charges.
Each multi-tool will come in its own carrying case.
The SOG includes such features as locking blades, a saw, a dull matte (black) finish and a field expedient explosive detonator crimper used in the preparation of simple charges. The tool will be issued with a bilingual instruction sheet that includes component use, features and care/maintenance.
