Fort Hood

My unit is going down there for spring break - I just had a couple of questions; Has anyone trained there? Is it a good base? Do we have to adhere to American drinking laws? Is it close to any major cities?

Hehehe... Couple of units in 31Bde is going to Florida for 4 day in late march also. But I doubt it, since it relies on air force and herc availability.

I personally havn‘t been to Fort Hood, but if it‘s anything like Marine Corps Base (MCB) Quantico in Virginia, I‘m sure you‘ll enjoy your stay. I had the priviledge of going to Quantico last spring break, I‘m actually going back this spring break as well, and I must say it‘s a very comfortable and professionally run base. Although, neighbouring Camp Upsher is less than hospitable. Anyhow, enough of my nostalgic rambling...I would imagine Ft. Hood being quite comfortable, modern and not lacking in recreational and training facilities, it is one of the US Armies major bases after all...

hey I‘ll be going there too.
what unit you in? I‘m in 4 RCR.
fort hood-home to the 1st Cavalry and 4th Infantry Division.
I‘ll make sure to bring my extra shiny kit I‘ve got lying around to trade with the yanks. I‘m sure the 4th Ifantry Division will be back from Iraq in March.

Have fun in fort hood, Going to fort pickett in Feb. Dont know what american unit gonna be with us, first year 75th rangers (same as somilia in 93 most ppl went) Sencond year was 10th mountian (again same as in somila)

Nice People, Rangers taught us 4 manstack , And we been using that since.

Yes,the drinking age is 21 even on Base!!

South Central TX, Kileen is the town outside Fort Hood. It is just North of Austin. Kileen is a typical town next to a Major Military installation. Lots of Bars, tatto shops, surplus stores, fast food joints, etc.

I was in the Dallas/Ft.Worth just this past spring on a exhange working on the old SAC base Carswell

Last time Ive went to that states, they let us drink on base, they had a rule if you served in the army or the forces your allowed to drink, but you still had to be 21 to buy :-(

Gentelmen;

In December, 2003, I had occasion to be passing thru Columbus, Georgia, on the way to go fishing in Alabama, and was amused by the huge amount of "military loans " locations near Fort Benning. These are places that will loan money to US army types for a length of time. The concept is as follows, you sign over ther title for your car, and they give you a loan, at high interest rates. There were also regular pawn shops, if you wanted to pawn your TV, or jewellery, all with big signs that they are "military friendly".

I also saw places that specialise in buying military "souveniers"?

Now my question to you. Has anyone here ever seen a similar collection of busineses around a CF base? I never have. Is this a indication that US military members are in such financial trouble, that is so bad that the bases are surrounded by shops that offer them loans to "tide them over ", from one month to the other? The roads in the three mile radius near the main gate to Fort Benning were chock a block with these loan shops. And according to Major Baker, above, Fort Hood sounds the same. I wonder why this is?

Numbers my friend, numbers. I do not know how many soldiers there are at Fort Hood but can just imagine. We have not had 100,000 in the forces since the mid 60‘ and that was all of us in all the bases. The same can be said all over the world. When the Canadian Army was in Germany there was less than 10,000 on any of our bases, leave the base and there was not much as far as companies that lived off of the military, but go to a US or German base in Germany with 100,000 soldiers and you saw the same thing.

We just got back from Fort Hood last night. We worked out of North Fort Hood, and partied in Fort Hood proper. The people we met were great(except for the Sgt inspecting our weapons)
The place was HUGE!!! The base itself is a city of 200,000 plus.
