Flags burned at veterans' graves in Washington, replaced with swastikas

ORCAS ISLAND, Wash. (AP) - Vandals have burned dozens of small American flags that were decorating veterans' graves for Memorial Day and have replaced them with hand-drawn swastikas.

Authorities say forty-six flag standards were found empty and another 33 flags were in charred tatters Sunday in the cemetery.

Swastikas drawn on paper appeared where 14 of the flags had been.

Members of the American Legion on this island off Washington's northwest coast replaced the burned flags with new ones Sunday afternoon.

The vandals struck again on Memorial Day after a guard left at dawn, the San Juan County sheriff's office said.

This time, the vandals left 33 of the hand-drawn swastikas.

Sheriff Bill Cumming said in a statement this is not an act of free speech, this is a crime.

Investigators believe there's more than one culprit, based on the number of flags that were vandalized.

The sheriff said deputies were trying to lift fingerprints off what little physical evidence they were able to recover.

       What an absolutely disgusting act, to degrade the graves of veterans and burning national flags on Memorial Day! Whatever group did this, be it anarchists, neo nazis, etc, they should be branded terrorists and crushed like the insects that they are!

It is a sad, sad day in the world when individuals drag our fallen into a political argument upon which they have had nothing to do.....

The fallen, who gave their lives so that these bozos have the opportunity of free speach have been, for the lack of another word, been back-stabbed.
