I've been in for about 4 years now, and I'm wondering if there are any "cool" courses that engineers can take? My unit only ever seems to get spots on BWW, comms or water purification....

Water purification is a pretty "cool" course depends who you are I guess. You Res or Reg?

Combat Engineers may be offered the opportunity to develop specialized skills through formal courses and on-the-job training, including:
•Combat Diver
•Soils Analyst
•Explosive Ordnance Disposal
•Instructional Techniques

As they progress in their career, Combat Engineers who demonstrate the required ability and potential will be offered advanced training. Available courses include:
•Radio Communications — Field Operations
•Water Supply — Advanced
•Power Boat Operator
•Heavy Equipment Operator

Based on the few courses that he has seen after four years, I am guessing the former.

As a reservist, you can get the tractor and dump course.  Boat operator is also open to reserve combat engineers.

HII (or HIM or whatever it is called now), BMO/CTI/AMO, TQ (if they still run those), TCCC, we've also sent guys on Pathfinder as well.

Saying that, those are what is available to Reg Force Cbt Engrs, it is most likely MUCH harder for Reservists, but when I did my HII we had 1 or two reservist infantry on it with us.

Dump courses are now a unit responsibility since it was pushed out of the school....The only ones that I have heard have been 32/37/38 CER's running one.

To be honest, I'd really rather not get lost in the dark abyss/void of Heavy equipment. I've seen too many guys get their dump/back hoe quals and that's all they'll ever do for the rest of their careers despite their best efforts. No more courses/tasks once you get thrown into Heavy.

So, with the exception of EOD (which as a reservist the chances of getting the course is nil), engineers can only get courses that make us only slightly more than glorified sand baggers?

What is it your looking for course wise. There are plenty of opportunitys for other courses including jump, rappelling and as mentioned Combat Diver. It's all about being in the right place at the right time with the right quals in place.

If what's been listed doesn't intrest you maybe it's time to look for a new trade. Reserve life can get mundane but opportunity is always around.

I'm just looking for something more exciting than driver wheel, or BWW because other than career courses, those are the only other courses I've managed to get. Same goes with everyone else in my unit minus the one Sgt that has AOA.
