HEADING DOWN â “ Sgt. Al Brown, come on down! The tradition of the â Å“Engineer at the Topâ ? continued Thursday, as the member of the Base Construction Engineers ends his 57 hours of living atop a 50-foot tower. The event raised nearly $6,000 for the United Way campaign.

CFB PETAWAWA â “ Talk about reaching for lofty goals.

Sgt. Al Brown of the Base Construction Engineers clambered down Thursday from the 50-foot tower where he has spent the last 57 hours starting on Tuesday. He is the latest person to join a unique fraternity â “ those who took part in the â Å“Engineer at the Topâ ? fundraiser for the United Way.

Officially, the event raised $5,650 and counting, which continued right up until he reached the ground. There, meeting Base Commander Lt.-Col. Dave Rundle, he was informed the amount was getting close to $6,000.

Jeff Daiken, who since 2001 has headed up the event, said the record had been set in 2000 by Master Cpl. (now Sergeant Major) Bernie McInnis, who raised $6,010.63 that year. â Å“We're hoping he breaks it,â ? he said.

Things turned out well for Sgt. Brown. The weather had been warmer than usual for this time of year and the wind didn't play a factor in making things challenging as in years past. He said he had talked with others who had done this event before and had an idea what it would be like, but there were a few things he didn't count on.
