China standoff

China is evasively avoiding returning 24 American servicemen/women after a mid air collision. Reasons for this are only speculatory but China may be trying to convince America not to sell advanced military technology to Taiwan. They may be looking into America‘s surveillance technology as well. In addition, China is "detaining" scholars that were on research trips to China.

For the past several months, activity in the area has been stepping up. China is not only taking a more aggressive stance against the US but is also assisting Iraq with the aquisition of air defence systems.

After two days of no contact with the 24 crewmembers of the US aircraft, they were finally allowed a diplomatic visit. China has not allowed for the release of the crewmembers yet nor given access to the US to inspect it‘s aircraft and demanding an apology from the US before the facts of the accident are clearly known. China has also demanded that the US cease all intelligence gathering activities in the area from this point on. Both of these demands are highly unlikely to be met at anytime in the future.

While China insists that the larger and slower US plane is at fault for crashing into a smaller and faster Chinese fighter, the US claims that that scenario is highly unlikely. Furthermore, China says that the US plane had no right to land on Chinese soil after the collision.

What do you think? Anyone have anything to add to this?

Jeff
