CFLC SURVEY OF STUDENTS IN PRIMARY RESERVE (P RES)
UNCLASSIFIED

THE CANADIAN FORCES LIAISON COUNCIL (CFLC) WILL CONDUCT AN ON-LINE SURVEY OF P RES MEMBERS WHO ARE HIGH SCHOOL AND POST-SECONDARY STUDENTS IN THEIR CIVILIAN LIVES. THE SURVEY WAS LAUNCHED ON THE CFLC WEBSITE WWW.CFLC.FORCES.GC.CA ON 1 OCT 04, AND REMAIN ACTIVE UNTIL 30 APR 05.

ALL P RES MEMBERS WHO ARE PRESENTLY ENROLLED AS STUDENTS (PART-TIME AND FULL-TIME) OR WHO ARE ON LEAVE FROM SCHOOL FOR MILITARY TRAINING AND OPERATIONS PURPOSES ARE ENCOURAGED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE SURVEY.

THE PURPOSE OF THE SURVEY IS TO OBTAIN INFORMATION REGARDING THE CHALLENGES STUDENT-RESERVISTS FACE BALANCING THE DEMANDS OF THEIR ACADEMIC PROGRAMS AND THE REQUIREMENTS FOR MILITARY SERVICE. THIS INFORMATION WILL BE USED TO DEVELOP CFLC OUTREACH PROGRAMS AIMED AT SECURING EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTION SUPPORT FOR STUDENT-RESERVISTS TO FULFIL THEIR MILITARY SERVICE REQUIREMENTS WITHOUT NEGATIVE CONSEQUENCE TO THEIR ACADEMIC STANDING.

PARTICIPATION IN THE SURVEY IS STRICTLY VOLUNTARY AND ANONYMOUS. RESPONSES WILL BE HELD IN STRICTEST CONFIDENCE.

SUPPORT FROM COMMANDING OFFICERS IS REQUESTED TO PROMULGATE THIS INFORMATION TO ALL STUDENT-RESERVISTS UNDER THEIR COMMAND.

QUESTIONS REGARDING THE CFLC SURVEY OF STUDENT-RESERVISTS MAY BE DIRECTED TO CFLC OUTREACH OFFICER LT(N) IAN LIVERMORE, AT 1-800-567-9908.

This is a good initiative.  For too long we have relied on apocryphal stories from senior pers long removed from actually facing the challenge of being a student reservist (who typically lacks the seniority to have a voice at the decision making table).

Yeah good initiative, I just hope the message will reach the bottom of the chain of command of every unit.

On a side note, while looking at the facts, it says that student-reservists represent 39.6% (10124 members) of all reservists. This puts the total strength of the reserves at around 25565 members, but we are in fact far less than this number (closer to ~ 15500)...I guess there is a mistake somewhere in those numbers

ark, you are only thinking of the army reserve.  The Air, Navy and Comm Reserve pushes the numbers up to the number CFLC quotes.

I was always under the impression that the total number of reservists (army, navy, air force, comm included) was around 15000 and the reg force 55000 to 60000
( for exemple http://www.fims.uwo.ca/olr/feb2603/recruitment.htm )

Do you have any official dnd links that would confirm the repartition or res vs reg force ?

From the dnd.ca FAQ section:

How many CF members and DND employees are there?
The CF has about 60,000 members in the Regular Force and about 20,000 in the Primary Reserve Force. DND employs about 20,000 Public Servants.

I think CFLC is taking into consideration the entire Reserve Force, vice just primary reserve.  So this would include the Primary Reserve, CIC, Rangers, etc.
