Australian navy Ships to Visit St. John's Harbour Monday

A small piece of history will be made tomorrow as two Royal Australian Navy ships will dock in the port of St. John's for the first time. The province's Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Dave Denine will attend the ceremonies to welcome the HMAS Sydney and HMAS Ballarat to the city. Lieutenant-Colonel Jamie Patten-Richens, Australian Military spokesman says the ships are on the military maneuvers part of Operation Northern Trident 2009. Lieutenant Patten-Richens says this is the fourth ship to carry the Sydney name. The ships have been as close as Halifax in the past but never docking here. The ships arrive at around 8:30 a.m. and the HMAS Sydney will conduct a gun salute upon entering the Narrows. The ceremony will take place on the Harbour Apron, Piers 10 and 11 at 11:30 Monday morning. The Freedom of Seaport will be conferred on the vessels' commanding officers, Captain Peter Leavey of the HMAS Sydney and Commander Kevin Turner of the HMAS Ballarat.
