Just a shot in the dark here:

My grandfather - going on 92 this year and still kicking - has finally had to give up living at home with my grandmother back in Ottawa.  While he's going into an assisted living residence very close-by (a matter of blocks away) he's no longer "at home" and despite his refusal to complain and standard stiff upper-lip, I know it's going to take him a while to get used to it.

Anyway like I said, shot in the dark here, but he was a Sapper back in the war; did his training in Pet before going over and spent five years in Europe.  Next time I'm back home I'll have to ask him exactly what unit he belonged to (I recall him saying 30-something-bridging-company) but I would imagine the spiritual successor to whatever unit he belonged to would today be 2CER.  I'm wondering if there is anything that 2CER kit shop or something would be willing to do/create/sell/whatever (I'll be covering the cost) to help me make his new place/room a little more like home.  I was just thinking something like a 2CER flag, picture, figurine - anything, just something sentimental.

So is there anyone here from 2CER that would know how to go about doing something like?  Or maybe just offer me a point of contact?  I would really love for the Army to do something sentimental for him in his last few years here.

Much appreciated in advance if anyone can help.
Cheers.

Get hold of Chuck Isaacs here, he's the sapper gear go to guy.

Great thanks, firing out a message right now.  If there's anyone else that has any ideas I'd welcome anything.

Bump.  First contact was kind of a bust, only 1CER

If you check some of the 2 CER discussions you may have some luck.

Any former or current engineers from 2 Cer?

Your profile says you're in Val, have you tried the kit shop at 5 RGC?  They'll have the catalog for the main CME\RCE kit shop in Gagetown and they can order anything you need.  By a bust, do you mean Chuck wouldn't sell to you?  I'd find that odd, as he ships all over the place.

Maybe Chuck just has 1 CER stuff.
There is someone at 33 CER here in Ottawa that makes wooden Bailey panels (12x6 or so); that might be nice to hang on a wall or on a display shelf.
Let me know and I'll pass you the contact info.

Looks pretty sapper generic to me, but whatever, no skin off my wrinkly little nut bag where a guy shops. https://www.facebook.com/groups/464850476891425/photos/

Sorry I haven't responded before, I've been busy running around preparing for my posting.

It wasn't that anyone refused to sell/ship, I've actually decided to go ahead with a purchase from Chuck.  It was my attempt to gain some kind of contact at 2CER that didn't go anywhere.

I was kind of hoping that I could have procured something in an official capacity for the Old-Boy but I didn't have high hopes (just because of the nature of the situation), but what I've managed to get from Chuck will suffice.

Anyway, thanks for the contact!  It seems it will work out well in the end.

This is the number for the duty desk at 2 CER. Call and ask to speak to the RSM or RSM's assistant, they will more than likely be happy to help. Construction Troop makes the nice wooden bailey panels as presentation gifts, although if I saw one of those in my 90th year I'd probably punch whoever gave it to me as my back spasm'd in horrible recollection. Actually that would be a wooden replica of an end-taper-panel, THAT would make me go squirrelly.

Before anyone gets their panties in a knot the number is open source.

Junction panel and articulator... ugh, there it goes again.

Haha, that's fantastic.  Alright, thanks for the information!

Just for sake of argument; if I'm trying to get something "official" from 2CER would it not be slightly inappropriate for me (a lowly FCS Corporal) to contact the RSM of 2CER directly?  Y'know, before I find my boots buried in well-intentioned fecal matter.

That's why he has a secretary clerk assistant, usually a Cpl or M\Cpl to field those calls.

Who says you're even in the military??? Mr. Smith, seeking a memento for his grandfather...

You wear your dog tags when you're not at work don't you!!  ;D
