A member of the Canadian Forces has been found dead in a house at the Esquimalt base on Vancouver Island.

Capt. Jenn Jackson, speaking for CFB Esquimalt, said the death was discovered Tuesday morning, but few details are being released.

"But what I can tell you is it's always devastating when we lose a service member," she said. "And our condolences definitely go out to the family and friends of the member."

The military's National Investigation Service is working on the case instead of the Victoria Police Department, because the death occurred on National Defence property.

Jackson said the name of the deceased will be released once relatives are notified.

The B.C. Coroners Service is also looking into the death, but has not yet issued a statement as to whether it was a suicide.

Canada's Armed Forces have been rocked by several suicides over the past few months, including four in the space of just over a week at the end of November.

Last week, the Department of National Defence said it was in the process of hiring up to 54 mental-health professionals to fill a decade-old need for supportive services.
