China Objects After 2 US F-18s Land in Taiwan

BEIJING — China protested on Thursday after two American jet fighters landed at an air base in Taiwan, which Beijing regards as its own territory, reportedly for the first time in 30 years.

Two US F-18 fighter jets made an emergency landing at an air force base in the southern city of Tainan on Wednesday, with US authorities saying one of the planes had developed a mechanical failure.

Taipei --  Two American F-18 fighters left Taiwan Friday afternoon after making an emergency landing at a Taiwanese Air Force base two days earlier due to a mechanical problem in one of the aircraft, Taiwan's Air Force said.

U.S. maintenance personnel arrived at Tainan Air Force Base in southern Taiwan late Thursday and completed the work Friday morning. The two fighters left for their base in Okinawa after repairs were completed, an Air Force official said.
