Is the toque considered a proper headdress that you are meant to salute in?

How are you meant to properly fall back in after you've gone to the front of the parade square to get promoted or receive some sort of award? I know I take a step back. Salute. Right turn. And start marching. But how do I re-enter my spot in the ranks? If this is what the parade looks like...

When I salute an officer am I meant to check my arm before they do? I am under the impression that I am supposed to salute until they salute back, and then check their arm, at which point I then check my arm. Is this correct?
