Victoria is facing a public-safety crisis

Supported housing as fire base location...

Weapons, drugs seized from Johnson Street facility yet again, VicPD says

For the second time in less than a month, Victoria police have seized drugs and weapons from a temporary housing facility on Johnson Street.

The latest seizure came on Jan. 10, according to a statement from the Victoria Police Department issued Wednesday.

On that date, officers from the VicPD General Investigative Services Unit were joined by the heavily armed Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team in a search of a suite in the building on Johnson Street's 800 block.

Inside the unit, police found and seized two firearms, 1.4 kilograms of suspected drugs – including methamphetamine, fentanyl and cocaine – and cash. One of the weapons, a handgun, was loaded, police said.

One man was arrested at the scene, VicPD said, adding that he was released pending charges related to firearms and drug trafficking.

What is “didn’t have a PAL/wasn’t a lawful gun owner, but was from a racial group that the PM feels is disadvantaged, and thus deserves to be pre-granted leniency?”

I'm sure there are a plethora of reasons why it has gotten this way. It's a shame but expected. Expect it to get worse.
I don't know...

The realist in me agrees with you, and expects it to get worse.

The optimist in me is seeing a noticeable shift in the general attitude of the public towards incompetent government, part of which is our handling of criminal matters.

I think the days of being excessively woke & soft are going to be coming to an end, for a little while anyway. (Until the government pendulum swings yet again this way...)

I’m drunk On a beach. It’s my anecdotal experience that we don’t need the death penalty- we need to do the penalties we have better.

When I was a young cowboy- the farmers saw me as their friend. They would arrest trespassers (at gunpoint) and thieves and they would call me and turn them over. Usually the suspect would be very excited to get into my custody and out of theirs. They didn’t say much. The suspects said less. And I nodded and took the person to jail. The system SEEMED to be reasonably functioning for everyone.

Now. I am not the farmers friend- they hate me. They are frustrated with the system- and they go farther than they used to, the suspect laughs the system off- and I am arresting the same people at the same farms more often.

On top of that- the farmers give me canned lines like “I feared for my life” rather than just honestly telling me what happened. The lawyer is now the friend.

I don’t know what the answer is but we are headed in an awkward way because we refuse to deal with crime in a satisfactory way- yes we need to do root causes. Address disparity. Create opportunity,

We ALSO have to support the everyday people who play by the rules because that is what allows society to function.
Booter, if you could just blurt out in a drunken (yet coherent) rant between senioritas, why do you think things changed from how they used to be?

Lighter sentences? Farmers fearing they'll be in more trouble than the person they apprehended?

The MSM twisting things to make the police the bad guys? The MSM covering things like the BLM protests, or Canadian media blatantly twisting things to suggest Canadian police officers exert force based on skin complexion while ignoring the weapon the person had? Etc etc

Did the system used to work better? Was society more respecting of a system that seemed to have their interest at heart more than the criminals?

EDIT - Whoa, I posted this like a week ago. Not sure why it just started to show now.

I wish I could get arrested for crimes that involve drug trafficking & firearms, and walk out of the cop shop without even being charged…

Here I feel he’d be charged with what they feel is appropriate, and they’d push hard for remand - which I imagine he would be remanded.

If they have to amend the charges afterwards to reflect the facts, so be it.

We have a BIG fancy prison with TONS of room in it still. (2 whole blocks with 80+ cells each, currently being unused.)

Is this what a ‘get out of jail free’ card gets you? Where do you buy those, anyway? 7-Eleven?

I have a feeling there are outside forces working on this. Society has been flipped on its head and I think now it’s starting to correct itself.
The MSM for the most part never met a criminal it didn’t love except if you’re in the CAF. Then it’s “off with his head”.
Every dead criminal was a poor unfortunate misguided misunderstood “family man” . Many of these so called family men don’t know how many or who their kids are.
Rant may continue later.

@CBH99, sadly, I don’t think illegal firearm leniency is limited to the worsening public security situation in Victoria. It continues to worsen, I believe, across Canada, fueled by Trudeau’s misplaced demonization of lawful gun owners while he continues to soften against a materially measurable increases in criminal use of illegal firearms due to some deluded vision that those who illegally use firearms in the commission of a crime wouldn’t have done so if they hadn’t been unfairly treated by Harper Canadian legislation, law enforcement and the courts.

My opinion isn’t really valuable but i usually drunkenly rant that it’s the decay of everything. I don’t wish for the old days- there was a different set of issues.

But then- your local people only knew local news. So a rash of breakins where we caught the guy was it. Now everything is national news- groups of people from across the world sharing their experience- so now every story where something doesn’t go right or well becomes part of a national consensus.

Rather than Square City having a couple unsolved crimes, now nationally there’s hundreds and they are all part of the awareness- connected even though they aren’t. Because when I look at things from hundreds of Kms above earth everything looks related or the same. It’s only when you look at things in a micro sense that you see the differences- we don’t do that. Everything is lumped in. We don’t even separate American cop culture from Canadian. “All the same”. Which is stupid. And cops here are to blame for trying to emulate what they see on TV,

So all local problems can be seen as an epidemic because groups find each other on the internet and chicken little all their individual experiences into a group reality.

Cops are increasingly political and increasingly less experienced- entire detachments where the senior person has two years- making them seem confused to their communities constantly.

Courts don’t take our word like they used to- and they don’t, no matter what the media or universities tell you, send people to jail- so the victim sees the charged person walk- if they ever wind up in cuffs, if they defend their property the response from crown and cops can be over the top- even if just cautioning them they COULD be charged- creating the atmosphere that only the victim will be held accountable.

Cops want to look like they are hero’s but don’t want dirty boots. The public wants justice- until it’s their kids, then they use an irresponsible media to get a story out for sympathy. Courts are wrong if they jail someone- and they are wrong if they don’t. Politicians don’t look farther than three years- we don’t aim for the stars we vote for our team.

So my old farmers are distrusting of us as agents of polticians that are viewed as playing a game, the courts as trying to jail them for preserving what they think are threats. And their institutions like media as demonzing them for keeping their families safe- the idea being if no one bothered them. They would bother no one. Right or wrong- that’s how it’s viewed, and the middle men- the emergency services and military and all the practical things that keep things moving along are more often painted as “not that great” and they never were.

Things aren’t allowed to be good anymore- someone has to come along and take it down. So we all sit in the mud. Distrusting.

Kinda tough to trust when the police, the prosecutor, the judge, and the social workers are all paid by the same people, and the guy who defends himself is limited by the quality of lawyer he can afford.

Something I regret to this day actually, and it’ll probably be one of those things I’ll regret not doing until I pass away, is NOT pursuing some sort of public or legal action against CTV, Global, City TV, CBC, etc etc in regards to how they portrayed a story about the RCMP a year or two ago.

The story was portrayed as a poor native guy was targeted because of his race, and was given a severe beating because of an expired license plate. (Anybody with any involvement in the system should have known this was nonsense…)

They showed 5 seconds (maybe 8 seconds, but that’s being generous) of dashcam footage of an interaction that spanned over 10 minutes. And the 5 seconds they showed was near the end, when the officers had to take down the individual who was actively trying to fight them.

Turns out the individual was Chief of whatever reserve he was from, drunk after a night of the casino tried to enter his truck and drive home. He was verbally aggressive and berated the officers for 10 minutes, and at a few points made fists & tried to get physical with the officer.

The officer was professional, tried to find solutions, kept his cool, and kept the man from driving home.

When backup arrived they took the man down hard, because there was literally no other way.

They showed 5 seconds of a 10 minute long clip, narrated it to make the officers sound racist & violent, and had the RCMP leadership clamouring over itself to investigate, review, and promising action that racists aren’t tolerated!

When in reality they had the whole 10 minutes, and very deliberate showed the only 5 seconds in the entire clip where the officers had to get physical, and narrated it blatantly dishonestly.

They lied through their f**king teeth, and millions of people would have taken their word for it if the Edmonton Journal didn’t release the entire dashcam footage unedited.

Did anything happen to all the MSM outlets who had the footage, knew the truth, but CHOSE to mislead the country anyway? Nope. Nothing.

I truly do believe a vast majority of the problems we have in our society today have their roots with the MSM.

It’s literally the reason why people believe what they do. They have an unbelievable amount of hard and soft power over society, and I believe cause almost every problem we have…yet they aren’t held accountable in the slightest.

If someone does get caught, it’s the lowly news anchor reading a teleprompter that gets thrown under the bus. The big machine doesn’t give a shit, they just keep on doing their thang

He wasn’t driving, he was simply a passenger in that case. Had literally no reason to get involved but chose to anyways. The worst part is the crown dropped the charges against him and his lawyer stated it was all a unjustified racist thing against him because the charges were dropped.

How do they train police Officers to deal with the press in situations like that (if at all)?

We developed a few effective techniques in NI to handle the press.

Having your own film crew on scene capturing events as they unfolded worked well, especially when they get shots of the film crew paying kids to throw rocks at us (in time to make the 5.00pm daily newscasts) ;).

I'm not one to advocate violence - well yes I am. Some people need a good throat punch.

That story died quickly when the full clip spread through the internet on Youtube.

At least he turned himself in ;)

Suspect arrested in arson at Richardson Street home

Victoria police were contacted after the fire by Oak Bay police, who told them a suspect had showed up at their station.

That story died quickly when the full clip spread through the internet on Youtube.
It did, yes. As it should have.

My point was that it never should have happened in the first place.

And given how brazen & overtly open the attempt to mislead the public and reap distrust among one of our important national institutions was, the CRTC should have made an example out of each one of the major media outlets that aired the incomplete story.

It was an amazingly open opportunity to hold the media accountable, and show the general public exactly what they do. But, it never happened…

The biggest parasite in society today is the mainstream media.

It tells the mindless masses what’s cool & what isn’t, what’s trendy & what isn’t, what’s going on in the world, what’s happening in politics, and how their individual lives could/would be affected by everything that’s happening.

The media’s #1 priority isn’t to convey facts in an unbiased manner, as we all know. It isn’t the leave people informed of the facts, and allow them to make up their own mind about an issue. The media’s #1 priority isn’t even to convey the facts at all.

The media’s #1 priority is revenue, so they can stay on the air and make some money for their shareholders. Period. Their #1 concern is generating revenue & turning a profit.

They do that by attracting viewers with a product that prioritizes catching their attention, and keeping their attention. How do they do that? By using various types of manipulation to create a sense of dread, fear, urgency, or anger that affects the brain chemistry of the viewer.

The viewer leaves their time with their MSM outlet of choice with a sense of privileged information that subconsciously helps them feel more confident when they go out into said world, but also gives them a feeling of justification to be mad, scared, angry, or upset at various things.

The accuracy of that information is a distant #3 on the priority list, and can often be recognized as such by anybody who digs a little deeper on their own initiative.

This phenomena has become so pervasive in our modern society that it’s become acceptable. And it shouldn’t be.

The integrity of the officers who responded was directly attacked and pulled apart by the same media outlets that had the full 10 minutes of footage, yet deliberately chose to twist a narrative around 5 seconds of it.

The integrity of our national police force was attacked, which causes provinces to look into starting their own provincial services because of a tarnished reputation of the RCMP. People become more paranoid of police, less trusting of individual officers, which in turn creates a countless number of smaller problems at the community level.

And when ONE media outlet chooses to release 10 minutes of dashcan footage without narration, we see a very different story than what the MSM presented.

We see a police officer doing his job in making sure an extremely intoxicated man doesn’t get in his truck and drive.

We see the officer be as calm, polite and professional as one could possibly be while he attempts to find a solution to the problem - all while the intoxicated subject yells, hurls insults, takes threatening physical postures, threatens the officer verbally, and even attempts to strike the officer.

And when no alternative solution can be found on account of the intoxicated man’s behaviour, the man is taken down hard and arrested once backup arrives.

I couldn’t picture a more textbook way of handling that situation than how the officer did. His demeanour throughout the whole ordeal should be commended.

But back to my original point. That isn’t what we saw.

What we saw was 5 seconds of footage and a news anchor telling us about ‘disturbing footage’ and ‘disturbing allegations’ about racially motivated police brutality…

I realize having someone read off a few bullet points & present a link to where the viewer can watch the entirety of a situation for themselves may not be as captivating or dramatic as what the MSM provides

But just imagine how different our opinions would be on so many subjects if this were the case
