2023 Canadian Armed Forces General and Flag Officer senior promotions and appointments

I think that would basically be something comparable with the CPFs, and maybe a few tankers to have something on each coast. I absolutely understand the strategic capabilities subs bring to the table, but frankly we can't afford the cost to maintain them (in people or money), or crews to sail...

Maybe all the new capabilities we spool up then never use? NTOG is probably a good example, we developed the capability but don't ever have ROEs that support opposed boardings (and even normal boardings is pretty limited). BMD defence without infrastructure? 'Fitted for but not with?' Systems...

Federal Government & Union spar over returning to office

But it never was a blanket, and most jobs never had a WFH or remote option. Even during the full lockdown there were plenty of essential government workers who went into work just with additional precautions. The change is that now they want to have a blanket approach of rolling back all jobs...

2023 Canadian Armed Forces General and Flag Officer senior promotions and appointments

In our NATO meetings we're at least a rank lower than our counterparts generally with much, much smaller teams and that includes the US. NZ seems to be about the same. They absolutely get more done but it's still weird sometimes when you realize you are working as a 2 1/2 and when you talk to...

Federal Government & Union spar over returning to office

I think the people that are covering 3-4 jobs and working themselves to death (sometimes literally) really don't care what the general public thinks anymore, as regardless of what they do there is always the asshole trotting out the lazy public service trope. If they can do that effectively...

I've heard about this training thing you speak about; I thought with a posting message you just get some kind of download like in the Matrix, with occasional updates as things evolve.

That works for the RN because they have a much much bigger, stable and experienced technical support arm. My direct equivalent in the RN is split into 3 separate organizations with about 20 ish people doing the same scope of work as 2 of us. They are further supported by other teams and have...

Federal Government & Union spar over returning to office

I think that's where giving lower level leaders the ability to figure out what makes sense for their team and work, vice some kind of top down push. I like the hybrid option; some times 2-3 days a week (or more) makes sense, and can do a lot of useful things in person deliberately. Other times...

The low productivity of Canadian companies threatens our living standards

They did note that the work is still getting done, and suggested it was a per hour productivity drop., and an actual solution was to have a coherent plan and giving managers and supervisors tools to offset some of those gaps. DND isn't really doing that, and the arbitrary funding cuts to travel...

Great article, thanks. Always enjoy reading Richard's articles, always well researched and considers real, practical issues in the actual, real world context.

    Who needs sailors anyway?

As soon as you have munitions and some kind of targetting/control system on board, which has all kinds of secret and top secret components on it, they want security onboard. As soon as you have people there for security then you all the hotel facilities (which needs people to operate), and very...

Federal Government & Union spar over returning to office

One thing I'm looking forward to is taking actual sick days again; other than when I actually got COVID, haven't taken any in 4 years, and just worked from home instead on the days I would have gone into the office and been a plague monkey. Not doing that anymore though, if I'm "unproductive"...

It's hard to tell with the RCN somedays. I'm optimistic we'll get another Tribal class with FN buy in, but also wouldn't be surprised if we went with something inherently taupe with crests and mottos to match. HMCS Beige - 'Forever forgettable' HMCS Buff - 'Bland is best' HMCS Ecru - 'Meh'

PSHCP - Frustration abounds as public service health plan gets switched to Canada Life

So does this mean I still use Sunlife for dental for the dependent claims? When I inquired about 4 months ago, they sent me some steps to add it on, but still not included. My wife has it on hers as a PS employee for my daughter, but thought for Reg Force our Sunlife fully moved over last summer.
