So I was poking around on the internet a few weeks ago, looking for some way to upgrade my mag light, without actually paying for a surefire. And I think I found it.
I bought three things from http://www.zbattery.com/, and then unfortunately found out the next day that http://www.cpgear.com/ now sells one of those things cheaper.
The first is the Night Ize fibre optic light bender...
http://www.zbattery.com/zbattery/fpo05aa7.html
Does what it promises. Bends light.
The second is the Night Ize LED conversion kit with push button tail cap.
http://www.zbattery.com/luc-07.html (CP Gear also sells this now for $8 if I remember correctly, plus shipping is less)
The bulb is decently bright, three white LEDs, but is flood only, you loose the ability to adjust the spot. But still, fairly bright.
The button is the gem of this buy. You loose the ability to carry a spare bulb, but if you're switching the bulbs to LED, it shouldn't be a problem. The button itself is plastic, the housing around it is aluminium, and it seems like it's reasonably weather proof (Not for use under water, but I'm sure it would survive some rain or a drop in a few puddles or probably even a river crossing). You've still got to have the front of the flashlight slacked off to use push button (Not sure why the instructions don't mention it, but if you remove the black plastic plate inside the maglight that's under the normal bulb, you don't even need to have the front slacked off, the push-button does all the on/off), but it saves the irritating problem that maglights have of coming on by themselves when being jostled about too much.
Over all, definitly a value for the price.
The third is the Terra Lux TLE-5 LED upgrade kit http://www.zbattery.com/tle-5.html
Bought on a whim because it promised "tactical flashlight performance on a maglight budget".
Installs into a regular maglight in place of the bulb, I turned it on and unfortunately looked into the light, and am still seeing spots 10 minutes later. Definitly delivers as promised... also compatible with the above push button switch. If anyone knows where to get one of these cheaper, it would be appreciated...
End result, is with conversion from $US to $CND these things are a bit pricey, but they deliver as promised. Certainly, it's not as good, reliable, or bright as a sure fire, but it makes a reasonable second, and substantially cheaper.
